Photoshop was my first introduction to digital design. I was in my freshman year of college, and a local promotional products distributor was kind enough to give me his older version to play around with. Setting at my desk in my parachute pants, drinking a Tab, I remember being almost giddy with excitement. Okay, I was giddy. As I inserted the first floppy disc and began the installation, (there was a total of 8 discs as I recall), I was imagining the possibilities. My 486 DX2/66 with 8 MB of RAM blazed through the installation in a quick 20 minutes, and I fired it up. It was amazing; way more than I had imagined. Its capabilities were mind-blowing, and I have been hooked ever since.
Fast-forward a few years, and I was still playing with Photoshop and now Illustrator daily. My sister had been working in the print department at a local university and was starting her own print shop. She asked if I could help with layout and design for some projects from time to time. I jumped at the opportunity. After a few months, we decided to partner up and start another print shop in the neighboring county. We rented a hole in the wall of a building and hung a sign. Things went well for several years, and we grew our customer base and expanded our product offerings. Promotional products, signs & banners, and custom apparel became most of our business, and I enjoyed coming to work every day. Working with new clients and taking on different and unusual jobs was the perfect outlet for my creative side.
Since then, my sister has retired, and I still do the thing I love, working with small businesses to help them maintain and grow their relationships with their customers and staff.
